If he had such a miniscule role, why was he given so much prominence in the posters and trailers, I wish to ask the marketing team?!!!Īditya Roy Kapur is sincere. Seriously, Sanju Baba fans will feel completely cheated to see him sleepwalk through this special appearance. And believe it or faint, Achint Kaur as the Chaudhry housekeeper, gets more space than Sanjay Dutt. Kiara Advani, as the nautch girl, gets more screen time than Sonakshi Sinha. Of the cast, Varun - Alia chemistry sizzles even though their characters are half baked. Haha! C'mon guys, even the then much criticised 'Mohenjo Daro's (2016) Bakar-Zokar sequence appears more convincing than this bull!!! The VFX are okay except for that laughable bull fight scene where Varun Dhawan seems to be taming a hybrid version of bull, a rhino and a giant shrew. On the positive, the production quality is first grade and the grand costumes reflect the era perfectly. Kalank, under an accomplished director like Bhansali or Karan Johar himself, would have probably worked but under Abhishek Varman, the film crumbles faster than the cookie. After all the naach gaana, rona dhona and item numbers stretching to over two hours forty minutes of excruciating run time, we get to see India's partition and witness a 'DDLJ' (1995) moment in a 'Gadar' (2001) type mayhem at an overcrowded railway station. Next Souten dear catches the glimpse of a forever shirtless lohar (kohl eyed Varun Dhawan) and love shove strikes faster than the hot iron.
Set in a fictitious blacksmith township in Lahore, Undivided India, the film introduces us to the elite Chaudhry family whose ailing bahu (Sonakshi Sinha) chooses her own souten (Alia Bhatt) and literally forces her to marry her workaholic and aloof husband (Aditya Roy Kapur). Not any more!! The 2019 audience has changed and the millennials prefer their entertainment dose to be backed by strong content which unfortunately, Kalank totally lacks. And only star power mattered at the box office. Indeed, Kalank is a throwback to the times of mindless multi starcast films - like 'Raaj Tilak' (1984), 'Rajput' (1982), 'Dharam Kanta' (1983) and 'Badle Ki Aag' (1982) to name a few - where form was given more importance than substance.
But the execution is that of Raj Kumar Kohli's bloated multistarrers of the 80s. The aspiration is to beat the opulence and grandeur of Rajamouli and Sanjay Bhansali. This week, Karan Johar does a kinda one upmanship by making this period drama (or "love saga" as he would call it!!) set in the pre-independence era. Last year, Aditya Chopra produced the magnum hocus pocus called 'Thugs of Hindostan'. Rajamouli's period epic 'Bahubali' (2015) did to our own Bollywood bigwigs.
